As a mom and as a dad

Author: Elena Ivanova

If you double a number of inhabitants of Paris, you will get a number of Russian women who bring up their children alone. Specifically, 5 million. Why are there so many of them?

To give a birth to a child for Russian women is a sort of an action of despair sometimes. When the age is coming closer to 30 (the major part of girls in our country bear a first baby when they are 23-26 years old) and there is no a husband yet. The older a woman is - the harder .it is for her to find a good man who wants to marry - there are 6 lonely women for one lonely man. That is why 3 million Russian ladies have initially come to the decision to have a baby without a man. "I was 29 when that affair took place", said Maria, a mom of an 8-month-old son. "I wanted to have a family very much and I thought that our relationship with Sergey would bring us to a marriage. He seemed to be serious; he was telling me about his plans to have a son and a daughter. But when I got pregnant, he hid. He even changed his cell phone number. It wasn’t a question for me - to become a mother or not. I understand that my situation is much better than the majority of other Russian single mothers have. Being an owner of my own business, I can provide my son with everything he needs. But I had to move to another city to my mom, so that she can help me. Now I decided to try to find a husband among foreigners, because I have heard much about their seriousness. And that they wish to have a family in fact rather than in word".

Other two million Russian women are considered to be unmarried mothers officially after a divorce or separation with a civil husband. If a man doesn’t pay the child support for a long time, doesn’t complete his father’s duties or his new place of living is unknown, the court can terminate his parental rights. "My ex-husband didn’t participate in life of Arina and me anyhow. When we divorced (he left me for another girl), he promised to give us 20.000 rubles (500 Euro) a month. It was enough to continue bringing our daughter to play tennis, to learn English and buying new clothes for her. But a half a year later the husband said that his new wife was expecting a baby and that he didn’t have an opportunity to help us any longer. Officially he was unemployed, that is why he started hiding even from the court bailiffs. As a result I managed to terminate his parental rights. I did it because I had started searching for a husband abroad and I understood that I could have problems with Arina’s departure from the country. It is a pity it happened so, I wish Arina had a father. But it was his choice".

As far as the support of Russian women by the state is concerned, it is ceremonial. One-parent benefit is about 50 Euro a month, she has some benefits in payments for utility services, a school canteen is free for the child. That is why mostly relatives help them to bring their child alone. In accordance with the date of the Federal State Statistics Service, help of parents or brothers and sisters
