Holidays - what holidays our beautiful ladies like

Author: Elena Ivanova

The worst crime for a Russian man is not to congratulate his woman on the 8th of March. It can be worse only if he forgets about her birthday.

The 8thof March is a traditional Women's day in Russia. Communists invented celebration of it at the time of the former Soviet Union. It was the only day of a year when a woman was allowed to be a woman – tender, loved, beautiful. On this day in all regular families a woman could lot upon a breakfast cooked for her and upon all men she knows to tell her kind words and compliments. Everything was over on the 9th of March in order to be repeated one more time a year after.

A traditional present for the 8th of March is tulips. Carnations are usually given by the authority at work, together with a box of not expensive candies. A beloved man can surprise his woman by presenting her with roses or a beautiful bunch of flowers. Women also congratulate each other and give presents, usually small ones – cosmetics, books, sweets.

The 14th of February is also becoming more and more popular here, but also among those who are in love, of course. As long as the holiday is new for Russia nobody expects expensive presents on this day – a greeting card, a bunch of flowers or just a letter with love expression are received with pleasure. Also there is a holiday, favorite since childhood – New Year. The very night from the 31st of December till the 1st of January, but not Christmas. The last few years Christmas vacations are announced in Russia – vacations from the 31st of December till the 10th of January.

So the New Year's Eve is also a beginning of longed-for vacations.  However only office employees and teachers have a rest then, but beauty salons, stores, banks works on a little bit shorten regime. Usually on the 31st of December it is very cold outside, it snows often and snowstorms take place, that is why the holiday is a homy one, but not a family one. Only the couples that have little children celebrate it together or with parents. But mainly a cheerful company of 6-10 people is gathered, everybody sits at a table, eats much, drinks champagne, it is obligatory also to clang glasses together at the time of a chime of bells in the Kremlin which is shown on TV.

After the tableful many people go to make fireworks outside or to chute.
